Private residence relief

Private residence relief is a tax relief that is available in the United Kingdom for individuals who sell their main or only home. The relief is intended to help individuals by exempting some or all of the gain they make on the sale of their home from capital gains tax.

To be eligible for private residence relief, an individual must have lived in the property as their main or only home for at least part of the time they owned it. The relief is not available for properties that have been used for business purposes.

Private residence relief can be claimed by individuals who are selling their main or only home and who meet the eligibility criteria. The relief is calculated based on the period of time that an individual has lived in the property and the period of time that the property has been used for business purposes (if applicable).

It is important to be aware of private residence relief if you are selling your main or only home, as it can affect your capital gains tax liability. If you have any questions about private residence relief or need help with your tax affairs, you can contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for assistance.
